Banking at Post Office

Manage your banking at our branches or your local Post Office. Some services may only be available in branches.

Account fees

Transaction and account maintenance fees are payable on all business current accounts, based on account activity. These are calculated on a quarterly basis and, following at least 14 days notification, are charged to your account. Charges are applied in March, June, September and December.

Other fees and charges may apply, for example when using electronic banking, additional services or making foreign currency or international payments. Please see our Schedule of charges for business customers for full details.

FSCS Protection

Your eligible deposits with Bank of Ireland (UK) plc are protected up to a total of £120,000 by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, the UK’s deposit guarantee scheme. This limit is applied to the total of any deposits you have with the following: Bank of Ireland UK and Post Office. Any total deposits you hold above the limit between these brands are unlikely to be covered.

  • Who can apply for a Business Current Account?

    Eligibility depends on your business type, structure and how you intend to use the account. Some accounts may not be suitable for certain business types or requirements. To be eligible for a Business Current Account, you’ll be:

    • Over the age of 18
    • Based at a business address in the UK or ROI

  • What fees and charges apply to a Business Current Account?

    There is a quarterly maintenance fee and additional charges may apply depending on how you use your account. These include transaction and account maintenance fees. Full details are set out in our Schedule of Charges for Business Customers.

  • Can I switch my Business Current Account to Bank of Ireland?

    Yes. We use the Current Account Switching Service (CASS) to make switching easy. Availability of the switching service depends on your circumstances. Find out more.

    Yes. Many businesses use multiple accounts to stay organised. A second account can help you:

  • What is the difference between a Business Current Account and a Business Savings Account?

    Current accounts are designed for everyday banking. You can deposit and withdraw money, pay bills and use your debit card to make purchases.

    A savings account is a bank account where you can put aside money for the future. It usually earns you some interest over time, so your money can grow.


Applying for a Business Current Account


  • What details and documents do I need to open an account?

    To open an account, you’ll need to provide the following information and documents:

    • Personal details for all directors, partners, or business owners — including full name, home address, date of birth, and contact information.
    • Business details, such as the business name, trading address, and registration number (if applicable).
    • Financial information about your business — for example, projected turnover or nature of business activity.
    • Photo identification for all individuals who will be named on the account.
    • Proof of address for all account holders.

    Depending on your business type and circumstances, we may request additional information or documentation.

  • Which documents are acceptable to use during my application?

    To complete your application, we’ll need documents for identification, proof of address, and (where required) proof of business premises. Here’s what you can use:

    1. What can I use as proof of my identity?

    You can provide one of the following:

    • A valid passport
    • A valid UK or Irish driving licence (card)
    • An Irish passport card
    • An EU national identity card


    2. What can I use as proof of my address?

    Your proof of address must show your first name (not just an initial) and surname, and must be dated within the last 6 months (unless otherwise stated).

    Acceptable documents include:

    • A bank, mortgage, or credit card statement
    • A household utility bill (gas, electricity, landline — mobile phone bills are not accepted)
    • A UK or Irish driving licence (if not used for identity)
    • HMRC / Revenue correspondence (e.g., Tax Coding — not P60 or P45)
    • Local Authority correspondence (e.g., rates or council tax)
    • DWP / benefits agency letters (e.g., pension or allowance notifications)


    3. What can I use as proof of my business premises?

    To confirm the address of your principal trading premises, you can provide:

    • A utility bill showing detailed business use
    • A lease agreement
    • Government‑issued correspondence (e.g., VAT certificate, DAERA, Rural Payments Agency, Council‑issued Petroleum Licence)
    • VAT registration (approved documentation or website link)
    • A business bank statement showing the business name
    • Financial accounts that clearly show the trading address

  • Who can certify the documents I provide for proof of ID and address?

    Your documents can be certified by:

    • Your Bank of Ireland Account Manager
    • A member of staff in any Bank of Ireland branch
    • A qualified professional, such as your accountant or solicitor

    Please note: if certification is carried out by an accountant or solicitor, they may charge a fee for this service.

  • What happens after I submit my application?

    After you apply:

    • We review the information and documents you provide
    • We may contact you if we need more details
    • If approved, we’ll let you know how to access and use your account

    You won’t be able to use the account until the process is complete.

  • Will my application always be approved?

    Not all applications are accepted. Approval depends on factors such as your business details, the information you provide, and regulatory requirements.
