Simpler, faster mobile app on way for Bank of Ireland customers

Bank of Ireland is introducing a new mobile banking app, designed to make everyday banking simpler, faster and easier for our customers.

The Bank has now started communicating with customers about the new app, with the roll-out getting underway over the coming weeks. It will be rolled out to Android users first, followed by iOS devices.

The app, which is the Bank’s most widely used channel, has been redesigned around how customers manage their money day to day. The result is a smoother, more intuitive experience, with improved performance, stronger privacy controls and more straightforward navigation.

Customers will see practical benefits from the moment they log in. Everyday tasks such as checking balances, making payments or managing cards are quicker and more straightforward.

The new app comes with enhanced security including biometric security which has been extended, allowing customers to use fingerprint or facial recognition not only to sign in but also to approve payments, add cards to a digital wallet, view their PIN and add new payees. The new app will also make it easier for customers to stay on top of their finances and make informed decisions.

Key improvements include:

  • Clearer account views, with larger balance displays, continuous scrolling through transactions and daily running totals
  • Easier management of payees, with full details visible and simpler controls, including editing of references for specific payments
  • Easier standing order changes, including quick amount adjustments and clearly labelled ‘cancel’ and ‘block’ options
  • Greater privacy and control, including the ability to quickly blur balances and freeze or unfreeze cards
  • Dark Mode for more comfortable viewing in low light
  • Improved accessibility, including adjustable font sizes and design aligned with European Accessibility Act requirements
  • Better device management, allowing customers to view, rename or remove the devices linked to their account.

Gail Goldie, Chief Executive Officer, Bank of Ireland UK, said:

“Customers want digital banking that is straightforward, reliable and built around their everyday needs, which is why we’ve developed this new app experience to be simpler to navigate, easier to use and to give customers greater visibility and control over their finances.

Accessibility has been a key focus throughout, with features such as adjustable text sizes and enhanced usability standards supporting a more inclusive experience. It’s another important step in our wider work to ensure customers can bank with us in the way that suits them best, whether through our app, ATMs or branch network.”

Ciarán Coyle, Group Chief Operating Officer, Bank of Ireland, said:

“Our customers rely on our mobile app more than ever, with around 30 million log‑ins every month, so it is essential that it delivers a fast, simple and reliable experience. This new platform will represent a step change for what is now our most used channel, both in how the app performs for customers and how quickly we can continue to improve it.

It will enable us to introduce new features more quickly, while continuing to strengthen security and performance. This new app builds on important innovations we’ve delivered and highlights the pace at which Bank of Ireland is delivering meaningful change for customers.”
