Celebrating 200 years of partnership

Bank of Ireland and Atkinsons Royal Irish Poplin reflected on a shared history and heritage as the company marks 200 years as a Bank of Ireland customer.
Atkinsons Royal Irish Poplin, whose connection with Bank of Ireland has been traced back to 1826, was established in 1820 by Richard Atkinson, then Lord Mayor of Dublin, who asked a group of weavers to make Irish poplin for his shop. Mr Atkinson’s Irish poplin was featured on a court train worn by Queen Victoria in 1838 and was also awarded Royal Warrant.
Evolving with changing fashions, Atkinsons moved away from ladies fabrics towards the production of Irish poplin for cravats and men’s neckties, an area the business excelled in with its products worn by U.S. President, John F. Kennedy.
Today, the family-run company, which can trace its roots back to founder Richard Atkinson, employs 12 skilled workers and continues to produce and export cravats and neckties of the highest craftsmanship and standard for high-end UK tailors, retailers as well as prestigious schools and clubs across the UK, Ireland and USA.
Marking the company’s 200th year as a Bank of Ireland customer, Niall Devlin, Head of Business Banking NI, Bank of Ireland, presented Peter Nicholson, Chairman and Michael Nicholson, Managing Director, Atkinsons Royal Irish Poplin with a special recognition award.
Making the presentation, Niall Devlin said:
