Basic Cash Account

Basic Cash Account is available to customers who are over 16 years of age, who don't hold another UK current account, or don't qualify for our other current accounts. You can arrange for your wages or benefits to be paid directly into your account. You can also arrange to pay your regular bills by Direct Debit. This account is operated by cash card only, it doesn't offer an overdraft, a chequebook or a debit card.

How to apply

 

Our Basic Cash Account is available to customers that:

  • do not hold a current account with another bank in the UK, or
  • will switch their existing current account to us.

If you would like to open this account you will need to:

 

1.Complete an application

Apply online or by telephone using the contact details further down.
 

2. Prove your identity and address

We’ll try to do this electronically. If we’re unable to, you’ll have to give us the correct documents.

See below for the full list of acceptable documents. This will show you the documents we’ll accept to prove your identity and address. Make sure you refer to the correct section of the list to avoid confusion or delays.

All documentation must be in English.

 

3. Provide additional documents, if needed

 

If you do not live in the UK – Send us 3 months’ recent statements from your current bank.

    If you apply online and:

    a. agree to the use of facial recognition technology to verify your identity, a selfie plus two documents (one from box A and one from box B) are required. These documents don’t have to be certified.

    Household utility bill/e-bill1 (gas, electric, household charge, home broadband and home phone, waste and water charges) (not mobile phone or dongle contracts) (dated within the last 6 months)
    Bank/building society/credit card/Credit Union statement/e-statement1 (dated within the last 6 months)
    Mortgage statement/e-statement1 (dated within the last 13 months)

    1E-bills and e-statements can only be accepted where a passport, driving licence or EU ID card is provided as the Box A.

    All documents produced by customer must be originals.



    b. Do not agree to the use of facial recognition technology, a selfie plus two documents (one from box A and one from box B below) are required. These documents must be certified by

    • Accountant, Solicitor, Barrister, Attorney, Commissioner of Oaths/Notary Public, Justice of the Peace
    • Bank or Building Society Official
    • Post Office Official (UK only)

    If you apply over the phone and:

    a. upload your documents using our Document Uploader, a selfie plus two documents (one from box A and one from box B below) are required:

    Photographic identity document (Box A) Address verification document (Box B)
    Book type Passport (current, valid and signed) Utility bill dated within the last 6 months.
    Your current UK/EU/USA/Canada/Australia full photo card driving licence (signed and less than 10 years old) A Bank, Building Society, Credit Union or Credit Card statement (dated within the last six months) or a Mortgage statement (dated within the last 13 months).
     Your current UK or Irish provisional photo card driving licence with your current address (less than 3 years old)

    All documents produced by customer must be originals.



    If you apply over the phone or online and bring your documents to a Bank of Ireland UK branch:

    b. Two documents (one from box A and one from box B) are required. These documents must be originals.
